Transform large blank aluminum alloy butterfly sculptures into a work of art that will support school arts programs for children and youth.
The 5th Annual Butterflies & Friends Project is a community service initiative led by The Rotary Club of Colorado Springs to raise awareness and funding to ensure that children receive essential arts programs with the educational benefits that promote brain development, social skills, improved communication and effective learning.
Participating artists will contribute to making dreams real by transforming large-scale metal butterfly “templates” into original works of art. Each transformed butterfly sculpture will be displayed around the Colorado Springs community and then auctioned off this Fall, with proceeds primarily benefiting creative arts education for children and secondarily for the Rotary Club’s Community Service Fund.
The Project, Cause
This colorful event demonstrates the creativity of regional artists and raises awareness about the critical importance of childhood participation in art ~ a significant stimulus for later success in other disciplines including math, science, language, literature, and critical thinking skills.
This Butterfly Project provides a positive image and metaphor for children while simultaneously raising funds for their arts programs. As a creative artist, your participation can help promote a healthy cocoon for every child and encourage a creative metamorphosis into all each can be!
When to Apply
Design concept applications due: Mar 21, 2012
Notification of juror selections: Mar 25, 2012
Completed butterfly art piece: May 31, 2012
Artist Compensation and Understandings
Artists will be provided
- $250 stipend for materials for large butterflies
- $150 for small butterflies
- Any costs incurred over these amounts should be considered a donation to The Butterfly & Friends Project
- 10% of the auction sale price for their art piece
Artists must
- Seal painted butterflies with Rotary approved automotive clear coat
- Seal non-painted butterflies with Rotary approved sealant
Artists will be recognized
- During the community-wide exhibit on a plaque near their art piece
- On printed materials
- On the Rotary Club’s website
- At the celebratory auction event
More than one design concept may be submitted. Artists who are selected will be asked to sign an Artist Agreement.
Community Exhibit
Art pieces will be placed on display in outdoor locations for public viewing and interaction during the summer. The artist’s name, profile, and title of the art piece will be displayed near each work. In addition, a photograph of each completed piece, including the artist’s concept description, will be available on the Rotary Club’s website. A city map will identify the exhibit location of each butterfly.
